A Creative Pilgrimage: Two Soulful Weeks in Bali

May 3, 2025

My fascination with the cultural and creative goodie bag that is Bali continues to grow. I spent two wonderful weeks on the island this month with a group of design friends, exploring both its well-known and hidden gems — and soaking in all the inspiration this place has to offer.

We began in Sanur on the east coast, a quiet treasure trove of remarkable artists. I met painters, bakers, and even creative tile merchants — all passionate souls shaping the area’s unique design language. The atmosphere is so rich and easy-going, it’s no wonder so many expats have made this place home.

Our design tour took us west, where we based ourselves in Canggu. This part of the island was buzzing with immersive experiences — from local homeware designers to fine art creatives. A true highlight was meeting the incredibly talented portrait photographer Giovanna Aryafara (@giovannaphotography). Her work takes her to remote villages and tribal communities across Africa and beyond. Her storytelling was intoxicating, and her deep respect for her muses left a lasting impression. We also had the pleasure of connecting with Australian painter Krista Brennan (@wovenlines). Her meticulous detail and organic forms had us all captivated. Truly, wow.

Architecturally, my eyes were wide open from day one. A standout was the visionary Nuanu Creative City in Beraban — a surreal space filled with oversized sculpture, futuristic design, and bamboo wonders, all set against the lush backdrop of Nyanyi Beach. And speaking of bamboo: the Luna Beach Club, designed by Charlie Hearn and his team at (@inspiral.studios), was another marvel. A must-see for any creative soul seeking new shapes and spatial rhythms.

Of course, it wasn’t all running around with a sketchbook in hand. We made time for pampering at the beautifully designed Bodyworks Spa in Badung. Like many others, I snapped a million photos — but I also took a quiet moment to sit, breathe, and take in the terracotta-green interiors. It’s a calming, feminine space. Ladies, if you’re in Bali, put it on your list.

Finally, to really slow down, I escaped to the peaceful Jembrana Regency in West Bali. In Pekutatan, far from the tourist trail, I stayed at Kelapa Retreat & Spa in Pulukan — a secluded gem, nestled in with the coconut palms and banana plantations; where the sound of the ocean takes over, and you remember what stillness truly feels like.  It was totally restorative and if you’re happy to travel- go!
